In some ways this
ride was much easier, but also much harder than I could have ever expected.
I was well trained for the physical challenge, and although extremely tough,
I was ready. On the other hand, the emotional part of the ride was much
harder than I could have imagined. I met families every day from across this
great country dealing with cancer, and each one of the ambassador kids
touched my heart.

Thinking back, I had to deal with strong emotions when our son, Riley went
through his fight with cancer, especially coping with chemo and it’s
effects. When our daughter, Katie had to battle the same cancer these
emotions resurfaced. Somehow though, these close to home battles were
different than looking at other kids and their families. What I learned is
that when you are dealing with this yourself, you just do it and take it day
by day. When looking at these stories from the outside, you feel helpless.
Then again, maybe it just brought home the fact that our kids and myself are
cancer survivors and made me realize the bullet we all dodged.

I left home heading for Vancouver with the following goals in mind:
1. To complete the cross country journey.
2. To reach our goal of $50 000.
3. To make some new and lasting friends.
4. And of course, the big one was to have some positive impact on kids
living with and beyond cancer.

Well, I made the journey and we exceeded our goal, having raised $53 000 to
date (all thanks to your very generous donations)!!! I also made some
amazing friends that I hope to keep for life. In addition to raising
much-needed funds for Kids’ Cancer, I hope that we’ve sent a strong message
to these kids and their families that we care and are fighting for them.

This ride was a once in a life time opportunity and I encourage anybody with
the heart and drive to help to get involved in some capacity next year. You
can ride (full ride or ride-alongs in your area), donate or volunteer.
www.searsnationalkidscancerride.com

I am also happy to tell you that Carl and I proved that tandems can climb,
and speaking of my tandem partner, I left with a tandem partner and good
friend and came to the finish line with an awesome tandem pilot and AMAZING
friend. Thanks Carl!!!

Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement!
Terry

Sorry for not posting this sooner!!! But all families are safe...

Sorry for not posting this sooner!!! But all families are safe and sound in Halifax!!! Here is a picture of us dipping our front tires in the Atlantic ocean… Both Terry and I are very excited to have completed this amazing journey. We look at journey not only as the 12 days of riding, but a journey which started more than 7 months ago. We would like thank everyone who participated, voluteered and donated to this wonderful cause. The stories from the parents and children that are affected by childhood cancer across Canada were stories of strengh, determination and hope that this disease can be cured.

The Hoddinotts are back Saturday night in London. The Vancers will be taking an extended vacation and will not be back until July 1st. Take care and we will see everyone shortly!!!!

I will also be setting up a site where everyone can see all of the wonderful pictures that were taken all across Canada including some taken by Terry himself.

It’s been an exciting weekend in the Hoddinott and Vancer households as Terry and Carl cycled through their hometown (London) on Friday. There were lots of hugs exchanged and the guys got to sleep in their own beds for one night, which recharged their batteries and renewed their spirits to carry on to Halifax. They endured the soggy ride to Toronto on Saturday, as both families cheered all the way. The Sick Kids stop was especially meaningful for us as this is where Riley and Katie were treated for Retinoblastoma, and the ride was extra-special as their Ophthalmologist, Dr Brenda Gallie, was in Toronto to ride along with the team! Team 3 rode to Woodstock, NB tonight fighting the wind all the way. Terry didn’t have much energy today but got through the day with Carl’s great help. Only one more long day as they ride from New Glasgow to Lower Sackville NS tomorrow. They finish their ride in Halifax on Wednesday, where a huge celebration is planned. Louise and Kids are already on the road, following the team along the route. Katie and Riley and I will be flying to Halifax tomorrow to await the team’s arrival on Wednesday. The kids are SO sad to be done school early - NOT! Can’t wait to see the guys! Patti,Home Support Crew

We had a great ride in from Woodstock into Toronto today. It rained pretty much the whole time, but the sun did come out for 5 minutes;) It actually warmed up very nicely. I think everyone had a great time biking along with all of the national riders. Again, thanks to everyone who came out for the ride alongs and all the little bike/child helpers!!!

This is a picture of team 3 at the Terry Fox memorial. Quite an inspiration to us all!!!

Hello Ontario!

The team has finally landed in Ontario! Needless to say, Terry and Carl (and their families) are very excited that they are nearing their home turf! Carl has asked me to update their blog…easier said than done. During the few minutes that I spent on the phone with Carl and Terry trying to get details, it was hard to sort out what was fictional and what was made up!

On a more serious note… Terry is feeling better (thankfully). They admit that they are exhausted both physically and emotionally, but on a total high. They have met some incredible people and heard a number of touching stories. They have been blessed with beautiful weather throughout their ride…(other than a few easterly winds that almost blew the tandom off the road!). They have seen lots of wildlife, (most recently a black bear outside Wawa today) and some incredible scenery. They have had some uphill battles with mountains and some thrilling rides on the downside (to the point that Terry was slightly worried about making it down in one piece!…Hard to believe he has all that trust in Carl!)

On a not so serious note, Terry is advertising for a new tandem rider…and is riding in the front of the RV as we speak providing driving directions to Owen Sound! I hope that they make it!

Tomorrow they will start in Owen Sound and make their way towards London. They will be stopping briefly at Sears in Stratford at 3:30pm and moving on to Sears, Masonville in London at 5:30pm. If you are in the vacinity, drop by to wish them well. They appreciate all of your support and thank you for all of you good wishes that you have send their way. Thanks for taking the time to share in their journey!

Sounds like they’ve had quite an adventure already with
massive mountains to climb, severe heat and winds, very minimal sleep (2
hours the first night), and Terry has been battling some gastrointestinal
upset - not a good situation when you’re riding a bike for 10 hours a day!
But the guys remain committed to this challenge as they think about all the
children battling cancer and that keeps them going.

Great news on the fundraising front today - Team Terry and Carl have topped
their goal and are at $50 533 and counting!!! What an awesome feeling to set
a seemingly unattainable goal and then surpass it! The guys cheered when
they got the news. Again, thank you for all your tremendous generosity and
support of these remarkable guys!!!

Terry and Carl are part of Team 3 if you’d like to follow them on the
website. There are great updates, pics, blogs, links to media coverage, etc.
I have become a blogaholic, checking the site every hour or so. It’s a great
way to feel a part of this incredible adventure.
We are the National Riders
We come from far and wide
To put an end to cancer
Is the reason for our ride
We’ll cycle coast to coast
Raising dollars everywhere
For the kids who suffer daily
To show them that we care

We’ve learned about nutrition
Lactic acid and heart rate
The training’s hot and heavy
No not like on a date
Our bodies became leaner
Our strenght just grew and grew
Every hour was well worth it
Helping kids is what we do

We’ll pedal across our country
Meeting people everywhere
We’ll ride along together
And our mission with them share
So they will get to see
That cancer can be beat
So that more kids will survive
Standing strongly on their feet

We’ll cycle this great country
From Vancouver to Halifax
Our legs they will be groaning
As will our butts and backs
But none of that will matter
You can certainly rest assured
We do it all for kids
So that their cancer can be cured.

GoogleEarth view of our June 11th "test" ride.

GoogleEarth view of our June 11th "test" ride.:
Ok, some of you know that I’m (Carl) a tech geek at heart. So, I’m going to try something a bit different… If you have Google Earth installed on your computer, you can actually see the route that we do for any given day. Today we had a ride thru Vancouver. So if you click on the above link, google earth should start up and show you the actual route that we did. Very cool!!!! Please give me some feed back to let me know if this is working. This information is coming from my Garmin 301 gps.
