made it into vancouver! Meeting some great people. Staying at ubc until saturday
tandem finally thru security! Took some bike tools away but good to go to vancouver
While we were out on our rides after the past couple of weekends, we had a couple of interesting events. The first one, involves having a full camelbak of Eload dumped on me. The fun part of riding the tandem is that it can be tricky to start, during and even to get off in synch. During one of our starts, it went bad, very bad. We fell pretty good. In fact, I fell on my camelbak and it burst open . Eload then proceeded to soak all over my body. While Terry did not see this, he heard the fountain spray and was laughing way too much.
The other story involves a malfunctioning railway crossing. So Terry and I come up to a railway crossing with the lights flashing along with the barierrs down. We approached cautiously, and soon enough, the lights stopped flashing and the barrier was up. However, just before we crossed the lights started flashing again and the barrier came down making us stop. We checked both ways and no sign of a train!!!! So we started up again after the lights stopped flashing and the barrier went up. Remember how I mentioned the tandem can be tricky? Well, we had another false start. I ended up right below the crossing barrier only to hear the bells and lights start to flash again!!! I calmly turn to Terry and say ‘Can we move back a little bit? The barrier is about to hit me’ Just in time, we were able to move back and avoid any barriers to the head.
Still having lots of fun.

While on the way home from work, I was reflecting on this whole journey that we’ve been on… the endless biking, fund raising, balancing work, family and did I mention endless biking? I was wondering why am I doing this? Then I saw a child on a bike. I said to myself, that’s exactly it! This is why we are doing it…
you see, a bike is something that most kids look forward to….
first, getting a bike with training wheels
second, mastering riding the bike on training wheels without falling and getting mom and dad to bandage you up
third, having enough strength to hide the fear of biking with only two wheels and without mom or dad’s hand
finally, a sense of freedom!
A child with cancer only wants to be free again. Terry and I are riding for the kids that can’t ride for themselves. Riding for them until they can ride again on their own!
Well, the final strech is upon us… Less than 30 days until leaving for Vancouver!!!! Terry and I have been very busy training, fund raising and being with our families.
I’m taking a forced break in training since my bike seat post bolt broke tonight!!! One of the challenges with riding the tandem is that I have to move my seat post back and forth from the tandem to my regular bike. I must of tightened it too much this time since the bolt broke. Oh well, this gives me a chance to blog a bit. I will post some pictures from the Sears BBQ couple of weeks ago.
Another fund raiser is taking place this Saturday, April 25th outside Masonville Sears. Come out and have some food and fun (maybe taking a spin on the tandem???) Sarah, our other London National rider will also be on location!!!
