Home at Last

Well, we are finally home again and very glad to be here! In some ways this
ride was much easier, but also much harder than I could have ever expected.
I was well trained for the physical challenge, and although extremely tough,
I was ready. On the other hand, the emotional part of the ride was much
harder than I could have imagined. I met families every day from across this
great country dealing with cancer, and each one of the ambassador kids
touched my heart.

Thinking back, I had to deal with strong emotions when our son, Riley went
through his fight with cancer, especially coping with chemo and it’s
effects. When our daughter, Katie had to battle the same cancer these
emotions resurfaced. Somehow though, these close to home battles were
different than looking at other kids and their families. What I learned is
that when you are dealing with this yourself, you just do it and take it day
by day. When looking at these stories from the outside, you feel helpless.
Then again, maybe it just brought home the fact that our kids and myself are
cancer survivors and made me realize the bullet we all dodged.

I left home heading for Vancouver with the following goals in mind:
1.  To complete the cross country journey.
2.  To reach our goal of $50 000.
3.  To make some new and lasting friends.
4.  And of course, the big one was to have some positive impact on kids
living with and beyond cancer.

Well, I made the journey and we exceeded our goal, having raised $53 000 to
date (all thanks to your very generous donations)!!! I also made some
amazing friends that I hope to keep for life. In addition to raising
much-needed funds for Kids’ Cancer, I hope that we’ve sent a strong message
to these kids and their families that we care and are fighting for them.

This ride was a once in a life time opportunity and I encourage anybody with
the heart and drive to help to get involved in some capacity next year. You
can ride (full ride or ride-alongs in your area), donate or volunteer.

I am also happy to tell you that Carl and I proved that tandems can climb,
and speaking of my tandem partner, I left with a tandem partner and good
friend and came to the finish line with an awesome tandem pilot and AMAZING
friend. Thanks Carl!!!

Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement!

Sorry for not posting this sooner!!!  But all families are safe and sound in Halifax!!!  Here is a picture of us dipping our front tires in the Atlantic ocean…  Both Terry and I are very excited to have completed this amazing journey.  We look at journey not only as the 12 days of riding, but a journey which started more than 7 months ago.  We would like thank everyone who participated, voluteered and donated to this wonderful cause.  The stories from the parents and children that are affected by childhood cancer across Canada were stories of strengh, determination and hope that this disease can be cured.
The Hoddinotts are back Saturday night in London.  The Vancers will be taking an extended vacation and will not be back until July 1st.  Take care and we will see everyone shortly!!!!
I will also be setting up a site where everyone can see all of the wonderful pictures that were taken all across Canada including some taken by Terry himself.

It’s been an exciting weekend in the Hoddinott and Vancer households as Terry and Carl cycled through their hometown (London) on Friday. There were lots of hugs exchanged and the guys got to sleep in their own beds for one night, which recharged their batteries and renewed their spirits to carry on to Halifax. They endured the soggy ride to Toronto on Saturday, as both families cheered all the way. The Sick Kids stop was especially meaningful for us as this is where Riley and Katie were treated for Retinoblastoma, and the ride was extra-special as their Ophthalmologist, Dr Brenda Gallie, was in Toronto to ride along with the team!  Team 3 rode to Woodstock, NB tonight fighting the wind all the way. Terry didn’t have much energy today but got through the day with Carl’s great help. Only one more long day as they ride from New Glasgow to Lower Sackville NS tomorrow. They finish their ride in Halifax on Wednesday, where a huge celebration is planned. Louise and Kids are already on the road, following the team along the route. Katie and Riley and I will be flying to Halifax tomorrow to await the team’s arrival on Wednesday. The kids are SO sad to be done school early - NOT! Can’t wait to see the guys! Patti,Home Support Crew

Good to be home!!!!  Terry and I came from Owen Sound on Friday and stoped in Stratford and London.  What a welcome in both cities!!!!  A great big thanks to everyone who came out to see us!
We had a great ride in from Woodstock into Toronto today.  It rained pretty much the whole time, but the sun did come out for 5 minutes;)  It actually warmed up very nicely.  I think everyone had a great time biking along with all of the national riders.  Again, thanks to everyone who came out for the ride alongs and all the little bike/child helpers!!!
This is a picture of team 3 at the Terry Fox memorial.  Quite an inspiration to us all!!!
